It is very important that your trailer is serviced/maintained by a qualified mechanic. For trailers that are used regularly, such as commercial, fleet, hire, or plant trailers, we suggest servicing every 3 to 6 months to maintain safety and compliance. For trailers that are not in daily use but are still used frequently, we recommend a service every 6 to 12 months. Additionally, it is crucial to perform a thorough visual inspection of all moving parts, lighting, and braking components before each use, and ideally on a weekly basis. This helps ensure the trailer remains in optimal condition.

In NSW, most light vehicles more than 5 years old need a yearly safety inspection report (also known as a pink slip). The 5-year exemption period is calculated from the month and year on the vehicle’s compliance plate. For imported vehicles, the 5-year exemption period is calculated from the month and year of the vehicle’s manufacture.

Your registration renewal notice tells you when you need an inspection.

Light vehicles include:

  • passenger cars
  • motorcycles
  • goods carrying vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 4.5 tonnes or less with no power-operated brakes
  • vehicles used to provide point to point transport (must be checked at least once a year)
  • trailers and caravans with an aggregate trailer mass (ATM) of 4.5 tonnes or less, including those fitted with breakaway brakes but not including those fitted with air or vacuum breakaway braking systems (trailers with a GTM above 750kg must have inspections yearly).

For more information, check out the NSW website.

In other states and territories, other requirements might apply, so always check with your local authority.

Maintaining your trailer properly will improve the trailer’s lifetime and can help increase its resale value when you’re ready to sell or trade it in. It’s safe to use a power washer on your trailer, as long as a mild detergent is used. However, avoid spraying water directly at the electrical components or lights. It’s also important not to use harsh chemicals, as they can damage the protective coating on your trailer. Make sure to wash off concrete debris as soon as possible as this will leave stains on your trailer. For best results, use a quality vehicle wash and wax solution along with a soft brush. Apply grease or specialized lubricants, such as WD40, Lanox, or Inox, to moving parts.

  1. Start by ensuring that the tow ball on your vehicle is well greased.
  2. Park your car/towing vehicle neatly in front of the trailer, making sure the tow ball of your vehicle is positioned underneath the trailer’s coupling head.
  3. Turn the jockey wheel handle counterclockwise to lower the coupling head close to the tow ball.
  4. If there is a catch or knuckle on the coupling head, pull it up/back to open it.
  5. Continue lowering the coupling head onto the ball until it securely engages. To confirm it’s properly connected, check underneath the coupling head to ensure the ball is fully enclosed and that the coupling tongue is tight against the bottom of the ball.
  6. Keep turning the jockey wheel handle counterclockwise until the bottom of the jockey wheel is fully retracted and tight. Engage any locking mechanism at the top of the jockey wheel to prevent it from opening.
  7. Turn the locking handle holding the jockey wheel counterclockwise and lift the jockey wheel. Rotate it to position the wheel clear of the coupling’s underside, ensuring it’s high enough and tucked beside the drawbar. Tighten the locking handle clockwise to secure the jockey wheel in place. This will ensure it remains positioned correctly.
  8. Next, securely attach the safety chain and breakaway cable to your towing vehicle. If using a noose around the ball, make sure it is pulled taut.
  9. Plug the 7-pin plug from the trailer into the socket on your towing vehicle, making sure the pins are not bent and the plug is dry.
  10. Before you depart, have a second person verify that all your lights are functioning properly.
  11. Check that all fasteners for doors, ramps, drop sides, toolboxes, etc., are securely closed, tight, or locked.
  12. Ensure all loads are properly loaded, positioned, and securely tied down before setting off.
  13. During your journey, periodically inspect your load and check for any loose items.

All our trailers coupling heads have a SCM approved lock installed which comes with several keys. The SCM quality mark guarantees that a lock is sound, effective and tested.

In Australia, the need for a special driver’s license to tow a trailer depends on the gross trailer mass (GTM) or aggregate trailer mass (ATM), as well as the type of vehicle you’re driving. Here are the general guidelines:

  • Towing a Small Trailer (Up to 750kg):
    • No special license required: If the trailer’s ATM is 750kg or less, and your vehicle is within the legal towing capacity, you don’t need a special license. A regular Class C (car) license is sufficient.
  • Towing a Trailer Over 750kg (But Not Exceeding 4.5 Tonnes Total):
    • No special license required: If the combined weight of your vehicle and trailer (Gross Combination Mass, GCM) is under 4.5 tonnes, you can still tow with a Class C (car) license.
    • However, the trailer’s ATM cannot exceed the towing capacity of your vehicle as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Towing a Large Trailer (Over 4.5 Tonnes Total):
    • If the combined weight (vehicle and trailer) exceeds 4.5 tonnes, you may need a Heavy Rigid (HR) or Medium Rigid (MR) license, depending on the total weight of your setup.
  • Other Considerations:
    • Always check your vehicle’s towing capacity and make sure you adhere to both vehicle and trailer weight limits.
    • If you’re towing a large trailer (e.g., for commercial use), specific regulations and licenses may apply.
    • It’s always a good idea to check specific state regulations or consult the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) or equivalent in your state for the most accurate and up-to-date requirements.
